in the town of Napanee Ont. (20 miles west of Kingston on Hwy. 401).
Sale Directions: Hwy.
401 to Hwy. 41 at Napanee, south on Hwy. 41 (Centre St.) through six sets of
traffic lights. The hall is approx. 100 yds. from the sixth set of lights on the
left or east side of the street.
The excitement is building as
we put together our annual January consignment auction sale. From a Kingston
family we will be offering five water colours painted in the 19th
century by the well known Canadian artist Lucius R O’Brien the highlight of
which is a painting dated May 24, 1880 showing Quebec City from the river with a
large number of sailing vessels in the foreground. This is similar to an oil
painting commissioned by the Marquis of Lorne in 1882 for the marriage of a
German prince and shown in “Visions of Victorian Canada” by Denis Reid.
Others are titled “Pointe a Pic, Murray Bay” and an untitled water colour,
possibly Kakabeka Falls near Thunder Bay Ont., etc., In addition we will be
offering a native canoeing scene by Verner and a selection of oils and water
colours by O C Madden of Napanee and Toronto, a water colour by F H
Brigden “Waves crashing on a rocky shore”, etc.
The print field is represented by a selection of professionally framed
hand coloured Barlett prints featuring scenes from both Ontario and Quebec and a
signed and numbered print by Norval Morrisseau #21/50 “Sacred Trout With
Eggs” 1970 together with a selection of late 20th century Inuit Art
to include examples in soap stone, textiles, dolls, etc., furniture offerings
will be highlighted by a painted chest of drawers with ivory or bone keyhole
escutcheons and a french foot (ex Bernie Gates coll.), an outstanding
Niagara Peninsula chest of drawers in original finish, a Chaise Lounge
attributed to Nisbett and in excellent condition, from the Covert/Massey
collection a Victorian fire screen and a tilt top table, a mahogany Georgian arm
chair from New Brunswick, a refinished pine blanket chest from the Lazier family
of Prince Edward County (ex Betty Bull coll.) a pair of flame birch
“D” tables from Nova Scotia C.1840, a stretcher based table (ex Kuebler
coll.), a set of six William IV mahogany chairs from Nova Scotia C.1835, a
Glengarry County linen press (ex Inverarden Museum coll.), an outstanding
pail bench in a rosewood grained finish with a cupboard below and galleried
above, a Quebec continuous arm Windsor chair in a red painted finish and from a
Merickville estate/collection a set of refinished arrow back chairs with a
matching armchair, two drawer stand in old varnish from Brantford Ont., and from
a Kingston area family we have four samplers signed in the following ways
Isabela McRobert Year 1832, Isadella Reid, Barton C W and one by Mary Ann Reid
aged 12 years Albion Mills, Barton Canada Weast (misspelled on the sampler) Year
1855 and the fourth is signed by one of the Isabelas but unfinished, a set of
four mid 19th century captain chairs with original stencil and pin
striping, a great sandwich sign from the Muskoka area, a mid 19th
century chest of drawers in birds eye maple, two walnut chests of drawers from
the same period, a rosewood Spinet desk, a round telescopic table with two
leaves, a tilt top candle table, a drop leaf Pembroke style table, games table,
a reupholstered mid 19th century wire back armchair, a Victorian what
not with inlay, etc., wooden ware to include folk sculptures, tramp art,
whirly-gig from Nova Scotia, butter prints, etc, crocks including a Welding
decorated with a blue Iris, lighting in both oil and electric including a slag
glass table lamp and coloured oil lamps such as an amber finger lamp and a small
blue font with a ruby ball shade, a two branch cast iron hanging fixture with
lamps, etc., Victorian patterned glass in clear and colour with examples in
Vaseline, opalesant, green, cranberry, milk glass and clear, china and pottery
will feature Port Neuf china and hand painted china of the same period to
include a rare mug with cow decoration, a Limoges tea set C.1870, an English
dinner set with a powder blue border and a floral center C.1850, 12 coloured
glass hanging candle vases (Christmas decorations), a cruet set with a beaver
finial, FT Thomas plates and Maple Leaf patterned plates, for the royalty
collector a rare tea set in luster of Victoria and Albert C.1850, a large number
of 19th century Minton china dishes plain white without pattern or
colour (possibly factory blanks) etc., a selection of textiles to include hand
made quilts and hooked mats, native baskets including a large Salish covered
basket, a dolls bed in brass and a doll’s hooded cradle in great paint, a rare
Montreal advertising clock marked J M Fortier, Crème.De.LA.Crème Cigar factory
Montreal on the bottom half and El Gaza and Honeymoon Cigars on the upper half
C.1890, plus many more items too numerous to list.
