Forty five years ago Robert Dafoe of Foxboro Ontario (a few miles
north of Belleville Ont.), at the age of fifteen attended his first auction
sale and bought a bean crock. Robert Dafoe was hooked. He’s still collecting
but has decided to begin the process of thinning out his collections which we
will do in the next few months in a series of auction sales. The first sale
will consist of his collections of duck and goose decoys from Ontario, Quebec
and the east coast which total over a hundred, a lap streak Monitor used by a
market hunter in the Brighton area in the 30’s, fishing equipment and lures in
excess of four hundred including both wood and metal lures, approximately 20
wood fish decoys, native art, bead and quill work and a small but good
collection of native baskets from across Canada, many with a local provenance,
Inuit soap stone carvings, a Victorian military sword, an Arkansas toothpick
type knife with horn handle and a yellow pine and leather covered scabbard,
pottery to include red ware and stone ware, weather vanes, coal lamps and early
lighting, animal traps, prints, oil paintings and water colours, a signed and
dated canoe paddle from the early 20th century plus other paddles,
an early 19th century sampler from the Foxboro area, pine pail
benches, blanket chests from the Hastings and Prince Edward Counties area,
primitive pine sideboard, etc.
