We have been asked
by John and Linda Pitman of North Bay Ont. to sell their collection of antiques
and collectibles, put together over the last 25 plus years. The Pitman’s have
sold their large country home and moved to smaller quarters.
Last fall I was
asked by Linda Pitman to view their collection in North Bay, after a six hour drive, I was
pleasantly surprised to find a contemporary log home literally dripping with
antiques and collectibles. The Pitman’s had over the past 25 years jammed their
home with a collection of granite ware consisting of most known forms in every
conceivable colour. This was stored in a collection of pine cupboards from
Ontario and Quebec and for the most part in original painted finishes including
a Waterloo county flat to the wall in its original grain painted finish, a
Waterloo county corner cupboard, grain painted armoires from Quebec, a linen
press with cupboards above two long drawers in original finish from Leeds
county, etc. The beamed ceiling was covered with baskets, both native and
wicker and in a corner there was a glass case with several west coast native
baskets. About a dozen games boards graced the walls and a collection of
miniature furniture together with salesman’s sample furniture were scattered
throughout the rooms. Other points of interest were the duck decoys, a small
collection of railroad items, Aladdin lamps, coal oil lamps, small hanging
cupboards, an outstanding cherry three drawer harvest table from Waterloo
county in it’s original finish, a set of stenciled gun stock chairs, several
early Ontario captain’s chairs, a collection of mostly cast iron match holders,
wooden ware, three figured maple chests of drawers, a collection of canes in
both wood and glass, birch bark containers, a salesman’s sample butcher block
and ice box in their original condition, blanket chests, small quantity of
textiles, hooked rugs, carpets, etc.
