We are offering by auction, the antique collection of Alan
Emerson of
Nine years ago Alan dispersed a portion of his
collection when he moved to smaller quarters. That sale was of superior quality
and included many items of outstanding condition and
merit. We are pleased that the quality of this auction is as good
or better than the first. Mr. Emerson is retiring and moving to a
smaller home. The McMullen’s, who have their home for sale are downsizing in
anticipation of their move.
Furniture: A Niagara Peninsula pine flat to the wall
cupboard in original paint with raised panel doors, four upper and two lower
and three lap drawers; a Niagara Peninsula open flat to the wall cupboard in
walnut in smaller size, C1840; a Niagara Peninsula cherry chest of drawers;
several blanket chests in original finish including two from Niagara Peninsula
and two from Markham all in excellent condition; a two drawer blanket box from
Grey County made by John Klempf and found near Neustadt; a small pine sideboard from Haldimand
County in its original condition; a stand up desk from Markham with bracket
foot in an old grained finish; a walnut Empire bonnet chest with ornate back
board in refinished condition; several Ontario captains chairs in original or
as found condition; a Windsor chair from the Maritimes; several lamp tables
with one and two drawers including one in cherry with two tiger maple drawer
fronts descended in the family of one of the founders of the Canada Land
Company; rope bed; a smaller harvest table in original finish with a pine base
and a two board maple top, found in the Brockville area and descended in the
Darling family; tiger and bird’s eye maple drop leaf table from Norfolk County;
a small hanging cupboard in pine in its original finish from Waterloo County;
slant front desk in the Governor Winthrop style and in original finish
(attributed to Abraham Latchaw); small hanging spice
cabinet in original finish; Empire mahogany sideboard in original varnish,
found in eastern Ontario; various clock shelves; Boston style rocker with
original paint and stencil from the estate of Viola MacMillan
and purchased at her country farm auction near Cookstown
Ont; plus other miscellaneous pieces of furniture.
Most of the furniture predates 1860 and is handmade.
Smaller Collectibles:
A Prisoner’s box from the Rebellion of 1837 made by
John Gibson in memory of Samuel Lount and Peter
Matthews who were executed for treason on April 12, 1838. The box is in tiger
maple and is dated July 12, 1838. It includes an inscription in India Ink which
reads “from tyrant taxes dreary, We’ll wander ‘til we’re weary, Far across Lake
Erie, And rest in Illinois”; a small child’s chest of drawers with original
pulls and finish, signatures in the drawer include Mary Smith; sampler found in
Orillia, Ont. and signed NJB Orillia 1862: (the
signature is that of Nancy Jane Baxter of Orillia and
was purchased directly from the family, the complete family history available
to the purchaser); a deed box in original brown and yellow sponge painted
decoration in excellent original condition; a carved mouse trap made from
butternut found in Wellington County, signed and dated 1878 consisting of a
double style guillotine trap activated by a lever when the mouse enters;
various examples of Bennington pottery; several stoneware crocks including
examples from Owen Sound, Brampton and Picton plus
others; many advertising tole ware pieces including
change trays; bottles; iron banks; toys; wall boxes; games boards; flow blue
items which include cups and saucers, platters and serving pieces; cast iron
mirror in its original two colour paint; pressed
glass and numerous other small collectibles totaling over 100 lots.

There will be approximately 25 paintings in the sale
including both oils and water colours. These will

Note: At the time of this listing there are many items
not specifically listed because they have been in storage. Many of these items
will be included in the catalogue that will consist of additional pieces of
furniture, china, several hooked rugs from Waterloo County plus other textiles,
glass bottles with early provenance, small furniture to include stools, tables,
kitchen items and several pieces of early wrought iron including andirons.
